Growing vegetables without a garden?

I want to start growing vegetables but i don't have a garden so i could only grow in containers and or a grow house but what would grow and could i just use compost or would i have to buy top soil as well i have no clue with these things but really want to be able to grow some veg can someone help or even provide me with a website address that i can find the answers from.
