Whats the best way to disguise a repaired hole in a hollow door?

we have just repaired a hole in one of our hollow doors. I was just wondering how to disguise it. We have painted the door a white gloss but the repaired bit looks obvious and stands out. should i have stained and varnished it or maybe used a darker coloured paint to help disguise the repaired bit?
