What is the appeal in nationalism?

i really dont see the appeal of nationalism at all. national pride to me is ridiculous, like being proud of your microwave for cooking a good meal. I would always consider the state as a servant of the population rather than visa versa and am honestly baffled that some people would consider an abstraction like a 'nation' or 'society' to be more important than its physical tangible parts.
